This is the Ted O’Neill Program, where we explore the science and philosophies for performance optimization and the elevation of the human experience. From the mind of Ted O'Neill, with Jon Leon Guerrero.

Welcome to the Ted O'Neill program. It's a short week this week, today's Tuesday.
0:29 Ted
Today is Tuesday.
0:28 Jon
But this week is a big week because this is a topic that plagues every human being. And it certainly demands our awareness before we can create any change. And so this week's topic is consumption.
0:41 Ted
And what does that really mean?
0:46 Jon
Well, it means everything that we take in. (Oh!) As it turns out, we take in with all of our senses.
0:55 Ted
Well, what do you mean?
0:56 Jon
And all of those senses affect us. We think of consumption a lot of times, especially when it comes to addressing physical things. If you're working out you got to eat right? Connotation being that nutrition is the big consumption thing but you know— (There’s more.)—that we consume. Yeah. So, as we've explored, we consume with our eyes and ears, and we consume things emotionally. We consume things, everything that we think, and it all affects everything that we do, which of course comes out when we apply weight.
1:30 Ted
Well, then we better get about the business of decoding this concept of consumption. (Where do we begin?) Well, you already started, I think: what does consumption mean, in a broad sense, or what does it mean specifically in the Paraphysical Training model, or how we perhaps apply this in our training and our coaching methodology at Diablo Barbell, soon to be Lifted Academy?
So, one of the things I think about, like you've already mentioned, is how to get ready to examine your life for where you’re consuming. Where are you? So, you mentioned food, but also in other places. We take in information through our eyes and through our ears and even energetically, I want to get into that a little bit.
So not just where are you consuming? What are you consuming? And what is it doing for you, and why do you consume it? So then, there's another piece because this is a frequent saying that we've used many times in our body composition rounds, and that's the phrase “Consumed by our consumption.” What does that mean? “Consumed by our consumption.” And what would that look like? You mentioned the four planes of existence—the four ways we experience as human beings: physically, mentally, emotionally, and energetically. So, what is consumed by our consumption, meaning each plane of existence, and then how can we turn that around?
2:58 Jon
Well, this is week seven of season four, I think you just described what's going to take us at least three weeks.
3:06 Ted
Let's see. Let's see how we can condense that. (Yeah.) Because maybe we can do it in a couple of days or maybe it does take three weeks, but right, there's a lot, because everything consumes something. Think about it: to some extent, everything that is on this planet consumes something.
3:24 Jon
That's right. We're all in a food chain.
3:27 Ted
Yeah, we don't really think of it as such. And we don't typically think of consumption as it applies to human beings outside of things that we shovel into our mouth, usually when we're really hungry, or craving something. So, one of the things—and this is, again, for those who have been at Diablo for a period of time have heard me say something along these lines. But I'm going to say this in a slightly different way. And hopefully this is going to come out really clear.
And this is really for people who are maybe just joining this podcast for the first time, to get a little bit of a feel what we're doing, but I often talk about reaching greater states of awareness, or greater states of consciousness, or greater states of actualization, in order to raise our human experience and have greater performance of whatever it is we're looking to achieve. But to sustain an elevated human experience, you have to have your brain and your body fully under control, and, in fact, I often say on lockdown.
When I say on lockdown, that does not imply a struggle. What I mean there is it's a non-negotiable. You have to starve your cravings and your compulsiveness. That's your physical craving for impulses. And you have to silence your mental obsessions. So, this is a totally misunderstood concept, yet I believe it to be an absolute prerequisite for freedom. So think of it this way: as long as things outside of you affect what happens inside of you—as long as you still feel the trauma of your past, it is, in fact, your present.
So as long as we're operating from a state of self-belief, someone can say something that happens outside of us, something occurs outside of us that affects who we are based on our belief system that we don't have any distance from the original imprint, or where that became a belief of ours. So, if that's the case, you're going to continue to repeat the same pattern and actions and behaviors that you say you no longer desire in your life, because everyone at some point says, “I'm seeking change,” here, or there, at this place, in that place. But this is why we drive this point home. Until we actually can separate from this concept of what we're consuming, and set some minimum expectations. We're going to be going through the same cycle of time after time after time. So, every thought, action, motion and nuance that you experience can be controlled seemingly against your will if you're in that state, essentially making you a slave of the framework, and a servant to your past experiences and beliefs. But I think you can choose differently. In fact, I would say you can rise above that.
6:05 Jon
Rising above is crucial to this process because, while I don't feel like I've mastered my consumption, I feel like I've experienced spurts of mastery. And in those spurts of mastery, what was common was I began with a very focused sense of purpose, and then let the idea to observe it happen. So those decisions that you make when you are susceptible to your compulsions—those weren't even decisions. You were just—yeah, it was it. That's my way of making it non-negotiable. I don't know if that's everybody's way, but my way of making it non-negotiable. Just like my way of making finishing a round of a medley or something non-negotiable is to separate myself from the experience and just put myself at the result, awaiting the outcome of the experience.
7:07 Ted
Now, I want to go a little farther on that, but I want to touch on something, I want to pause on this for a second. (Okay.) We're going to roll reverse for a second. (All right.) I'm going to pause you on that because you said you don't believe you've mastered this yet. So, I want to put a little context in the speech. How many pounds of body fat have you lost? 80? (Yeah, maybe 78 and a half.) And you've gained— (Coming to money.)—muscle mass, while losing the seventy-eight pounds of body fat. Now, that to me is a striking statistic. In light of the statistics that we commonly quote from the research on food addiction and weight loss. Yeah, that 1/10 of 1% of people who lose even 20 pounds, and they're not even qualified in this body fat versus muscle, so could be a bad 20 pounds. Yeah, I can sustain that for anything over a six-month period of time.
7:57 Jon
One out of 1000.
8:01 Ted
In 1000. So, based on that you would seem to have an elite level of mastery. But this is exactly what I'm talking about. Our standards are different. If I'm saying the minimum prerequisite, right, is to have your brain and body on lockdown, and for you, you still perceive this place where you can make some incremental progress. (Yes.) And then doing so if that's your minimum standard and expectation. How much farther are you ahead of the norm? How much have you been separated from yourself? From the, from the pack, from the general population, setting the stage to have a sustained, elevated human experience?
8:38 Jon
Well, here's what I've learned. It doesn't matter. I'm not in the pack. (Yeah.) And so what happens is we begin to surround ourselves with a new pack. (Right, yes.) So now if I have to compare myself with what should be optimal behavior, well then, I have to do better than just choosing at random Joe Parker, or Rawad, or Jake, or Isa, and suddenly, this is a different pack.
9:07 Ted
Yeah, so we're going to get into that a little bit more in depth on Friday. Okay, because that's going to be a piece of this whole concept and whole construct around looking at consumption differently. Because if we talk about the energetic plane of existence, how on earth, then, are we consuming from there? (Yeah.) And that's going to be Friday’s topic.
9:30 Jon
All right.
