EPISODE TRANSCRIPT

Hey everybody, this is Jon. Today, Coach Ted asked me if I had submitted a favorite episode. And frankly, I have several, but today is one of them. It's one of our very early episodes. It originally aired over a year ago and it's titled Visualize your Better Self. We sometimes refer to the concept as meeting yourself at the finish line. I really connect with it. I hope you do too. Here we go.

There's this concept in neuroscience that when you're running a subconscious program, biologically, your brain doesn't have the ability to create a thought independent of that. Unless you can either interrupt that pattern or program or your level of desire is greater than your attachment to that biochemical addiction from the past or that program that you're already running and that series of events. It's habitual.

Yeah. When I started training, one of the things that I would do to get me to the finish point was, I would imagine that it was a wartime I was getting shot at and I needed to make it to that next foxhole, or I was going to die. And that would keep me going and keep me through that last 20 feet or whatever it was. I was doing it. And that became the game. And then I eventually got to the point where I'm not, not to say I'm not focused, but I'm now just watching it happen. You know, we've talked about this. I know how the movie ends. I'm just watching all the times within the movie where you go, Oh, man, how's he going to get out of this one? You know, he is. But we're going to see how it unfolds. And so now I just watch how it unfolds. And that's a way of giving away my power. So, we often talk about surrendering.

That's actually a little bit different. So, let me talk about them for one second. There was an intermediate step that you did that we left out. So first, I liked that visual you created because in that case, you have to get somewhere and you can make it a life or death thing. But it's more important than your calves hurting at the moment. But the intermediate step was you begin to picture yourself on the other end of the parking lot or on the finish line of that conditioning phase as the new you and you're walking toward that. So that's a way of embracing all of your power by choosing something that's greater than your circumstance. Which is what you ultimately did. So, there's the element of surrender initially, right to where, okay, so I know I'm going to do this anyways. And so, then I'm just going to give it my best and create whatever kind of mental rehearsal or mental movie that I need to visualize what that is for me to do kind of play in this scenario. So that in between step two begin to connect you with your future you where you saw the greatest version of you at the end of that, I would say is where you begin to really connect with your power because if you now know you're going to get there that's different than the person struggling in the moment not knowing why they're doing it. So, if you can then in recognition of, I'm already there. What I'm feeling right now just doesn't matter, because it's part of the experience. It's part of what I did to get there. Now we're in a completely different place exponentially. We're not suffering wondering why we're doing something. We see this as this was the work that I did to create this effect. And I already know how it ends, but I've committed to this.
