EPISODE TRANSCRIPT

This is the Ted O'Neill program, a podcast that explores the science and philosophies for performance optimization, and the elevation of the human experience with Ted O'Neill and Jon Leon Guerrero.

Welcome to the Ted O'Neill program. We enter a new topic that I find somewhat baffling actually.

0:37 Ted
All right, yeah. Well, that's a great place to start. Let's see if we can provide some clarity. So, the new topic is structure and allowance, right. So those would seem to exist as polarities. So, this whole concept of structure versus allowance, it would seem that these are totally polar opposite things, which is part of the PPT motifs where we have contraction expansion, we have distraction, traction, we have things that allow for that, but the difference here is these don't exist. So much as polar opposites. They do conceptually. But how we ultimately use this is the blending of the proper amount of structure or a structure that is properly suited. And then the proper amount of allowance or you could say freedom or flow.

1:29 Jon
Okay, it's another way to look at this and how is it we determined the mix?

1:32 Ted
Well, that's going to be something we're going to get into we're probably have to slow roll into a little bit. So, let's talk about what it even is first, a little deeper. So why would structure be necessary? So, if you have a desired outcome, really with anything then anyone has been successful, they may have noticed that having a clear set of precise instructions can really aid you in achieving that outcome. So, if there's a path to be walked that's replicable it's worked for a number of people. That would be a need to have structure Yeah. As opposed to just freelancing and trying to figure it out. The structure versus allowance discipline. Amanda Creighton, calls it the art of life. Yeah, because again, we're not looking necessarily at the polarities of this. We're saying how do we exist out of this is more of a blend

2:24 Jon
Yeah. But let's talk about the polarities because it gives a context. And just as you bring it up, there are the producers and then the innovators. You know, the people in charge of manufacturing the thing and then the people in charge of coming up with the thing their brains don't work the same way. Right. Okay. So those would be sort of on the extreme ends.

2:47 Ted
Let's go into that a little bit. So, this is actually how this became a PPT discipline, you know most of these things in the Para physical training model. Were my observations on what was happening in what appeared to be a strictly physical discipline. For example, conditioning or lifting weights, okay. And then upon further analysis, there was much more going on the things that surround the physical mental state, the emotional state, the energetic state, that all actually contribute to the physical being the end product. So, this concept of allowance versus structure is something that for me, it took me decades to even understand where this sat in the mix or to be able to apply any of this myself. For example, 30 over 30 years ago. Alright, so over 30 years ago, I started studying metaphysics, and that led me to all manner of exploration of consciousness, esoteric thoughts, and then emerging sciences. I had no idea how to use any of that. In the context of coaching. In fact, they seem to be completely polar opposites. Yeah, like there was no like, this was a hobby. And this is my profession.

4:03 Jon
I see. So, it wasn't a matter of I mean, at the time you knew to gather that that data, something told you Hey, you should study this this is gonna come in handy at

4:13 Ted
Some point. Well, it was more of an interest okay. It was the exploration of things greater than and I really, you know, for decades salt training strictly as a physical means to an end. Okay. In other words, it started and ended physically. Yeah, we know that now to not be true. We've proved that.

4:34 Jon
And but it wasn't that you had the notion that it wasn't true

4:37 Ted
enough. I wasn't even there for probably 20 years. Mm hmm. I didn't know how to interrelate these concepts. Yeah. That was my initial experience for me. But then I would also see this amongst people that I observed in the consciousness community, where there was this overlap, right? There's like there's no structure. It's almost a rebellion against any kind of structure. And that's where a lot of the sciences look at a certain branch of metaphysics as really woowoo sure type stuff. Yeah, you start getting into some really esoteric ideas that don't seem grounded in anything but someone has an intuition. Yeah. And that's the driver simulation in a tinfoil hat and intuition. Typically add some crystals. Yeah, maybe some rocks that warm up or something right. So this is like this. All the trappings of like, over allowance. I'm just way out there. My experience is the only thing that matters. It doesn't matter how it encroaches on your experience, etc, etc. So, to that side, I was able to observe that you have these

5:38 Jon
opposite concepts, and you know to apply the one I mean, when it came down to physical training, you had steps and you had such a rigid structure. I mean, we know if we do work, we build muscle. And then you have on the other side somehow the intuition to gather this data that something's going on.

6:00 Ted
It seemed to help me the rest of my life, as if training was somehow completely separate. Now, this is especially important because I think a lot of our listeners and many members who are maybe newer to that are struggling with some of the deeper dive work that we do and PPT that's creating these other worldly results. They don't see where they line up with that. We're still stuck in the paradigm that I was stuck in 10 years ago to where this stuff exists in a state of separatism.

6:36 Jon
Yeah, leave that other stuff alone, and I'll see my kids.

6:39 Ted
Yeah, it was a hobby, right. It was an interesting thing that I thought would help with my life and maybe my career but I didn't see any applique and there was no practical application. Whereas now after observing things from totally different lenses, the only thing that I can see is accessing both of these states simultaneously. Yeah, and that essentially is what created para physical training. So, I mentioned the magical art of life. And that's that balance. So, when she says the art of life, balancing structure and allowance, some people call allowance flow, maybe. So balancing structure and a flow state is really what we're all seeking, in one way or another. So, if someone doesn't have enough structure, then they may not achieve their desired outcome.

7:31 Jon
Here's the difference. I think a lot of people who seek that flow state want it independent of structure. And they think that it's the answer. (Yeah) So, if I reach that flow state, that structure is meaningless. And it's

7:44 Ted
I voted on my others. (Yeah) Right. So, the other part of that is, if someone doesn't have enough allowance, or enough room in that flow state, that they're going to feel captive to the structure, then to have that they're going to lose creativity or insight or connection with the flow of life that's

8:00 Jon
moving through them. Horse pucky I say,

8:03 Ted
right, it doesn't make sense when you really understand what's going on, but it is an element of how the brain and how the ego works with this and so, to punctuate today, I would say if we look at this concept of structure and allowance, it's really the art of life and finding the blend between those two things. It's the balance. If we're able to just punctuate this concept that way for today, it's going to allow us to go a little farther on it the rest of the week.
