Emotional Intelligence Is Not Emotional Sobriety
Emotional intelligence helps you notice and manage the fire. Emotional Sobriety asks why you keep striking the match.
For more than two decades, Andrea has worked at the intersection of physiology, behavior, emotional development, relationships, leadership, and human transformation—turning difficult personal and human problems into practical systems people can actually train.
Doctor of Chiropractic · National Champion Powerlifter · Author of The You You’ve Never Met and The Composure Challenge
Andrea first sharpened her diagnostic ability through more than two decades as a Doctor of Chiropractic: look beneath the presenting symptom, identify the pattern, distinguish cause from compensation, and determine what must change for a different result to become possible.
Over time, she became increasingly interested in a problem that appeared far beyond the treatment room: why do intelligent, capable people understand what they are doing—and still repeat emotional patterns they genuinely want to stop?
Andrea's devotion to personal development was born from her relentless beleif in the ability for anyone to change or grow from injury of any kind (Physical, emotional, relational or reputation). After her spinal injury, becoming a high-level strength athlete appeared to belong to an entirely different life.
Through rehabilitation and deliberate training with Coach Ted O'Neill, she not only overcame her injury but became a national champion and elite powerlifter, with best lifts of a 529-pound squat, 319-pound bench press, and 407-pound deadlift.
The deeper lesson was more important than the numbers: your current evidence is not necessarily evidence of your ultimate capacity.
Despite professional success, Andrea recognized profound deficits in her emotional life. She could be defensive, fearful, controlling, resentful, reactive, and insecure—while simultaneously knowing the reaction was hurting the relationships she valued most.
Existing approaches helped her see what she wanted to be. They did not create the freedom she wanted.
Eventually, Andrea brought the same diagnostic rigor she used clinically to herself and asked:
That question became the beginning of Emotional Sobriety Training — EMSO.
“What controls how you feel, controls you.”
Andrea defines Emotional Sobriety as no longer making the negative emotions that once intoxicated you. It is not numbness, suppression, passivity, or pretending not to care. It is learning to retain access to mental clarity, personal standards, boundaries, motive, and a chosen identity even when life does not seem to cooperate.
Andrea's work takes the confusion out of emotions by making them simple and objective. She examines the developmental mechanism that makes the emotional response predictable—and therefore trainable.
Emotional intelligence helps you notice and manage the fire. Emotional Sobriety asks why you keep striking the match.
Andrea reverse-engineered her own transformation into a framework other people could train. EMSO examines emotional chemistry, early experience, beliefs, filters, recurring behaviors, motive, self-concept, relationships, and personal responsibility—but insight is never treated as the finish line.
A person can understand exactly why they are angry and still frighten their family. They can understand jealousy and still behave jealously. They can understand their childhood and still reproduce it inside their marriage.
Knowledge is not the same as development. Awareness is not true embodiment. Intention is not evidence of living it.
The question is what remains available when the same person, tone, criticism, disappointment, temptation, or pressure returns.
Andrea works privately with founders, executives, high-achieving professionals, couples, and families whose emotional and relational patterns carry consequences far beyond themselves. The work develops greater composure, discernment, relational mastery, and self-command.
A leader's intelligence is only useful while they can still access it. Emotional intoxication can make an accomplished person impulsive, defensive, controlling, avoidant, vindictive, indecisive, or unpredictable.
Andrea teaches that confidence, self-trust, self-respect, and dignity are not installed through affirmation alone. The subconscious watches what you do.
Every kept promise, emotionally sober response, and moment of principle over impulse becomes evidence. Every repeated violation of your own standard becomes evidence too.
Training dignity means demonstrating the evidence of your worth before your beliefs have fully caught up with your behavior.
Andrea explains why the difficult person, the tone, the unfair comment, and the urge to defend are not interruptions to Emotional Sobriety training. They are the reps.
The goal is not to eliminate difficult moments. It is to become capable of remaining in command when they arrive.
Andrea brought Emotional Sobriety to a broader audience through her TEDx Talk, The Power of Emotional Sobriety, and through two books designed to move the reader from recognition into real-world demonstration.
Introduces a different standard of emotional freedom: not simply controlling the reaction, but becoming free from the mechanism that once produced it.
The foundational discipline: understand the hidden mechanism behind predictable emotional patterns.
The next level: turn recognition into repeated real-life composure and a credible new standard.
"I had been trying to change my emotional responses by focusing on my behavior or circumstances. Changing the behavior alone was never going to be enough, and it wasn't working. I cannot overstate how life-changing this work with Andrea was. Today I feel calmer and more rational in situations that once would have emotionally triggered me. I take conflict less personally, while also taking more responsibility for my part in it."
"What I appreciate about this book is how clearly it speaks to that experience of feeling stuck in patterns you can't seem to shift, even when you're trying. It helps you understand what's actually driving those loops and offers a way forward that feels doable. The idea of Emotional Sobriety gives people a way to finally make sense of patterns that, up until now, just felt confusing. This is meaningful, practical work that can truly help people create lasting change."
"Andrea's processes helped me win a million dollars in Survivor, and — more importantly — helped me save my relationship in one of the most chaotic periods of my life."
Andrea's work tends to resonate most deeply with two kinds of people. They arrive from different directions, but eventually confront the same question.
They may lead, build, earn, perform, provide, or solve at a very high level—yet recognize a consequential gap in their body, emotional life, relationship, discernment, or purpose.
They have studied, reflected, trained, healed, meditated, gone to therapy, hired coaches, or explored spirituality—and are no longer satisfied by what they understand. They want to know what they can consistently demonstrate.
This is not designed for people collecting another fascinating framework. It is designed for people willing to practice until a different standard becomes visible.
Andrea does not position Emotional Sobriety as a replacement for every other form of development. State-change tools, meditation, therapy, introspection, spiritual practice, and performance coaching can all serve a human being. The distinction is the problem EMSO was designed to solve.
State & Performance Conditioning: Using physiology, focus, language, meaning, and action to shift negative emotional states and improve performance when they appear.
Developmental Resolution: Identifying and changing the beliefs, filters, motives, and recurring emotional patterns beneath the reaction so they don't appear in the first place.
Immersion & Action: State-change exercises, reframing, performance coaching, and deliberate action.
Real-Life Training: Relationships, criticism, disappointment, cravings, leadership pressure, and ego threat become the training ground.
Pattern Interruption & State Shift: Deliberately changing state and meaning to alter the emotional response and subsequent action.
Perspective & Mechanism Correction: Investigating why the reaction is being produced and training until it no longer automatically cycles.
Effective State & Action: Accessing a more resourceful state and moving effectively toward the desired result.
Consistent Composure: What becomes available when the predictable triggers are no longer triggers and old emotional chemistry no longer produces.
Guided Meditation & Attention: Using meditative practice, focused attention, and mental rehearsal to cultivate a different internal state.
Conscious Investigation & Real-World Reps: Using everyday triggers and relationship friction as the place where the old pattern is examined and consciously retrained.
Meditation: Moving beyond patterns of thought, feeling, and identity toward a chosen future or calm present.
Emotional Sobriety (EMSO): Outgrowing the perspective (thinking) and mechanism that repeatedly produce predictable negative emotional chemistry.
Meditative Induction & Mental Rehearsal: Repeated internal practice intended to condition a different state of being when meditating.
Motive & Mechanism Investigation: Examining beliefs, filters, motive, and behavior in real time, then practicing a more mature and humble response where the old pattern actually occurs.
Creating Internal Peace: Conditioning mind and body away from pain or stress to experience peace and tranquility.
Real-World Emotional Sovereignty: Greater composure, neutrality, and self-command in situations that previously produced predictable reactivity.
A person can build a company but not a peaceful marriage. Possess intelligence without discernment. Achieve professional authority without emotional command.
The Human Development Gap is the distance between what a person appears to have achieved and what they consistently demonstrate in the crucial areas of being human.
Andrea and Coach Ted O'Neill came to recognize that they had spent decades approaching the same central problem from different directions: human beings often achieve far beyond the level to which they have actually developed.
Through Sequential Human Development and The Lifted Ascent, they now work to close the Human Development Gap across purpose, physical command, mental clarity and discernment, Emotional Sobriety, spiritual connection, relational mastery, and societal impact.
Explore The Lifted AscentAndrea connects her own transformation to Lifted Academy's larger mission: common patterns are not necessarily permanent patterns.
Andrea's work asks one practical question: what if the version of you producing the problem is not the only version available?
